International Scholar Explores Rare Japanese Collection at Hegeler Carus Mansion

‘Graduate Student, Kiri Kumagawa, conducts research at the Hegeler Carus Mansion”

LaSalle, IL-On April 22nd, Graduate Student, Kiri Kumagawa was enticed by a fellow Japanese researcher to visit the Hegeler Carus Mansion to view its rare Modern Japanese paintings including several by Keichu Yamada in the Mansion’s collections. The modern Japanese artworks in the Mansion’s collection were invaluable to Kiri’s work while visiting the United States. Kiri enjoyed a tour and an up-close presentation of artworks while she was at the Mansion on Wednesday.

“Keichu Yamada’s series of paintings on the life of Buddha was a hybrid project heavily influenced by direct international contact. It stands as a crucial, text-bound predecessor to modern Japanese Buddhist paintings,” says Kiri, Kumagawa. Kiri is a student in the Graduate School of Humanities at the Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan. The Mansion was a first stop on her inaugural trip to the United States.

“We were elated to host Kiri at the Mansion and to assist in her research of modern Japanese artists,” says Laura Walker, Executive Director of the Hegeler Carus Mansion.

The Hegeler Carus Mansion will continue to work with universities and students like Kiri as it continues to discover and catalogue its unique collections.
